careful what you wish for

In Boston the seasons change with all the subtlety of a cracking whip. I have a theory that the weather in this city is controlled by a charming but dangerously eccentric “Weatherman.” A few days ago, this Weatherman decided that it should be Autumn, and that means now. Boston’s Weatherman is remarkably impatient. He promptly tipped the thermostat into the 60’s, and by the looks of the forecast, he has no intention of reversing his actions any time soon.

Make no mistake, Autumn is my favorite season, hands down. The crisp, clean chill in the atmosphere, the change of the leaves, and the associated memories of a dozen new school years cause me to love this time of year more than any other. My one weakness is that I hate climbing out of a warm bed and into a cold room. Normally, my addiction to warmth isn’t a big deal, since my bed is usually only slightly warmer than my room. However, since BU hasn’t turned on the heat yet, my desire to stay wedged between warm, soft sheets has been debilitating. An absolutely disgraceful percentage of my weekend was spent under the covers, as if I was some kind of hypothermic flood victim. Today, however, BU turned on the heat, and it came on in force. I flung open my windows in an attempt to back the thermostat away from eighty. Eighty degrees. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.
