fightin’ joe biden

Joe Biden

All last week I thought to myself, “Man, Biden would be great. Charismatic in all the ways that Obama isn’t, enormously experienced, a hawk who understands how diplomacy works, universally respected, and completely incapable of tolerating nonsense from either side of the aisle. He is exactly what Obama needs. But he’s a loose cannon. He shoots his mouth off, he rambles, he occasionally makes a huge gaffe, there isn’t enough room for both his and Obama’s egos on the ticket. They’ll never do it. They’ll go with someone safer.”

Props to the Obama campaign for making the right choice on this one. If, like me, you don’t know much about Joe Biden, check out this GQ profile from last year (the article is split into fifteen insufferably short pages, but it’s worth a read). What I did know about Joe Biden prior to Saturday came mostly from The Daily Show. His behavior in this 2004 clip (watch from 4:30 onward if you’re pressed for time) instantly made him one of my senatorial heroes. He looks like he’s on the verge of biting John Ashcroft, and really, under the circumstances wouldn’t you?
