I had a similar experience when I worked for the publisher of Cat Fancy. It was a 60 mile commute that took 2.5 hours on public transportation, or just 2 hours driving in rush hour. So, I had been getting up at 4 AM to get to the job by 8 AM on public transportation, which would get me out of work at 4:30 in the afternoon and home around 7 PM (which left me with all of 1 hour of free time if I wanted to get a full 8 hours of sleep). So, I started driving. If I "slept in" until 5 AM, I'd hit rush hour traffic and it would take 2 hours to drive each way, but if I still got up at 4, I could get to work by 6, take an hour lunch instead of a half-hour, leave at 3, and get home by 4 PM. So... negative reinforcement increased my carbon footprint.
