the spring look

“One does want a hint of color.” — Nathan Lane in The Birdcage

It hit 85 degrees in Boston today. Let me explain to you how big a deal this is. Sit down. If you are already sitting, sit harder.

This year, we got nailed with the sort of winter that makes you wonder if you shall ever again see rain fall from the sky, or walk in shoes that are not heavy-duty boots. This is the kind of winter where Snow works out some kind of deal with Wednesday, and as a result you get a fresh delivery of snow every single Wednesday. By early March, I began to think that perhaps the sun was an illusion sent to us from the Devil himself.

So yes, today’s weather qualifies as a miracle. Give my compliments to God.

The snowflakes that previously adorned the site had become meteorologically incongruous (chew on that for a while). The customary way to welcome the Spring, if you go back far enough, is with a community orgy. Goodness knows I could, but I thought that a new paint job on the ole’ website would be a more practical way to go. So, new colors, and an uncharacteristically garish header graphic. The secret sauce there is that I programmed that image, using Photoshop only for compositing and last-minute color adjustments. Thank you, Processing. Perhaps a tutorial post is coming.

So please, have a look around and kick the tires. Let me know if anything looks weird, or breathtaking, or both.

I really like the background squares, but I think they’re more mint colored than spring colored. And I’m not sure if I’d like to see the ones on the bottom with the same color scheme or not. That might be too much color. But I would probably also change the wallpaper. I like the wallpaper, and I like the squares, but the wallpaper is very baroque and classic looking, while the squares are simple and contemporary (but I do dig the overlay effect).

Regarding the background squares, I was torn between shades of green, to match the other greenery, or shades of blue, to evoke something sky-like and mix up the colors a little more. Ultimately I compromised and went for the mathematical middle: teal. Still not entirely sure about it.

The smaller squares that back the previous/next links are definitely staying that shade of khaki. Green looks nice if the header isn’t on the screen at the same time. Otherwise it’s just too much.

Perhaps it’s time to ditch that damask background, perhaps not. I’m still undecided.
